The Story:

The basic idea of the Diora KX 165 tip. (ICEPICK) ult. Coaxial small helicopter was drafted in 2005.

The coaxial system has been known form the first helicopter experiments. The first usable bound helicopter was the Petróczi-Kármán-Zsurovetz PKZ-1, which flew in 1918. After the 30s this kind of layout was unheeded, only the Russian company KAMOV is building such kind of very successful helicopters for more than 60 years now. At the moment you cannot find any coaxial layout helicopter in commerce. After 6 months of design the work has been started with the production of the rotor and engine. In the same time the testing of the own designed blade frame begun.

The coating reached its final form after several re-designing and its material is composite.

The body is a grid construction. Originally we wanted to make it from aluminium, but the definite solution was a CRMO4 quality welded steel.
x
x
The rear of the body was the achievement of a long design process. After more variations the last solution was a tail what includes a twin tail, made of lumber and three-pieces of vertical fins and a horizontal fin made of full composite. The adjustment of the two outer tail parts is 6º. This solution makes it possible to control the helicopter stably even on low speed.

The running gear contains two 8'' wheels on the back which are connected to the brake system and one self-righting wheel. Because of these things the DIORA helicopter has excellent rolling features.

The hart of the DIORA helicopter is the Subaru EJ25I type boxer engine with 165 horse powers We chose this engine because it is reliable, silent and the adjustment of the wrist- pins makes it smoothly running.

The size of it is favourable for the building in. It drives the reductor through six 17mm v-belts which are fortified with Kevlar textile. The v-belts take over the part of the clutch with the help of an electronically controlled stretching roller. In the reductor there are three bevel-wheels, which guarantee the opposite rotating way. The oppositely rotating rotor axe is fortified in several places to cut down the weight. The rotor brains are made of big strength aluminium, with hardy serial numbered steel brains in elox design. Two aluminium water coolers are responsible for the cooling of the engine. The bigger is with straight driven blower the other one is with heat switch blower. For the quite operation, the exhaust- pipe is responsible which is made of stainless steel and it is covered with refractory materials against the heat.

The unique rotor blade is symmetric NASA 0012-0032 profile is trapezoid shape and made of composite. These can be used for other helicopters and autogiros as well.

The controlling is a completely new development. The controlling discs are moved by pushing poles and pushing-pulling Bowden. The different controlling discs are controlled by a central controlling disc.

The main parts of the controlling:

Controlling elements in the cubicle.

Pushing-pulling Bowden's.

Bowden frame.

Controlling discs.

Pushing poles.

Rotor brains.

The cubicle is a stiffen composite shell construction. The ventilation is insured by the blowing through of the wind in the system. There are big spaces with embossed plexi surfaces inside the helicopter. The doors are attached in a 50 degree angle and they open mildly upwards to make easier the getting on off aboard. You can lock them and they are easy to reach from the inside.

We spent a lot of time with the seat which is ergonomically designed and you can slide it back and forth. So the using of the helicopter for longer time will be comfortable. The control panel is placed perfectly to prevent the twinkling. The basic instruments can be placed on the control panel. You can find a speciality on the control panel.

The combined engine-rotor tachometer, which is an own design. It is the combination of two LED columns for the better transparency. The switch board is placed above the head. The sound absorbing sponge, the leatherette drape, the map rack and the floor panel which is covered with carpet gives you a comfortable feeling.

We had to place the fuel tanks in to the centre of gravity of the axe of the rotors. In this way we could avoid the changing in the centre of gravity if the amount of fuel changes. The sizes of a one person helicopter and the amount of fuel witch you need to have for bigger distances are opposite with each other. So this is what gave the idea of the three tank layout. The two 20l fuel tanks, which are placed outside, are well designed because of the aesthetic and drag. In case of injury it rips safely so the fuel cannot get on the hot surfaces. The inner prime tank is 44l made of rigid aluminium and it contains the two fuel pumps. The refuel is going through the upper left side tank.

Currently we are doing the testing of the technology, the static and the flying. In line with this we start building the two person helicopters prototype. The two model is so resemble that the components needed for each is 80% the same.
x
The advantages and disadvantages of the coaxial helicopter.
x
In Hungary we have great experiences with the coaxial helicopters in the agriculture . In the last 40 years these type of helicopters (Ka26) flown 750˙000 hours and made 4˙300˙000 lift offs. The operational experiences were excellent. This is why we choose this kind of layout.
x
They have a lot of advantages:
x
Bigger useful efficiency
x
Better flying features
x
Insensitivity towards weather
x
Shorter length and smaller rotor blades
x
More quiet operation
x
Low vibration
x
But it has also disadvantages:
x
More difficult blade controlling
x
Bigger weight
